FIBREGLASS: CLEANING AND POLISHING

1) How to clean glass fibre decks and boat sides

Cleaning glass fibre does not mean just making it look nice, it implies being certain that the materials used are effective and at the same time gentle. FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER (powder to clean glass fibre) is exceptional for the power with which it removes dirt and halos you got used to see on your boat, and even more important FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER does not corrode or attack metals, other finishes or deck fitting, nor does it discolour or stain.
FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER is used in this way: wet the deck with fresh or salty water, cover the surface with FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER, brush thoroughly, in order to better distribute the powder and let it work for some minutes making sure that the surface is still damp. Then brush again vigorously, rinse with water and..... the result will be excellent. In case of vertical surfaces, you can use the cream type (FIBERGLASS KREME CLEANER) or add a little bit of water directly to the powder in a plastic container until it is as thick as yoghurt. FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER is highly suitable for large surfaces (deck, cockpit, fly), to remove halos next to stanchions and to hardware in general as well as the stain along side the water line. If you leave FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER during cleaning and it becomes white because it has dried out... no problem, you just need to wet it again and its action starts again without any inconvenience. Several customers leave FIBERGLASS POWDER CLEANER on deck during grey and rainy days or during the night when the dew helps to keep the powder active. On the following day brushing and rinsing will give even more surprising results because, having worked for a longer time, the powder will have cleaned better than the crew.

2) Polishing glass fibre

Then, if it's necessary to polish the more deteriorated parts, the LIFE WAX or POLYSHINE waxes are easy and secure means to obtain results. Obviously the surfaces to be polished are the vertical ones and not the deck where, outside of the non-skid strip, you would risk falling badly on your bum with all related consequences.
On the previously cleaned surface, distribute a thin layer of LIFE WAX or POLYSHINE thoroughly with a damp cloth.
When the latter turns white (because they're dry) it is enough to wipe with a soft cloth and the result will shine under your eyes. The work can be also carried out in full sunshine.
Using a rubber disk with a woollen polishing hood is excellent but the Boat Life philosophy is that maintenance is a job to be carried out in all conditions and with the minimum equipment. Carnauba wax and the polymers contained in LIFE WAX and POLYSHINE ensure a good result.

For a general boat clean BOAT CLEANER shampoo is a valid help for general maintenance. It does not contain any fluoride substances, it does not produce much foam and gives a deep clean. It is also ideal for crockery, linen and so on.

The metal scouring pad LIFE SCRUB ALL is a very long stainless steel wire (it doesn't rust) good for a thousand jobs, after which it is still intact. With LIFE SCRUB ALL it is possible to polish steel, scrub shafts and propellers, scrape, peel potatoes, scale fish, polish stainless steel and metal pans as well as crockery, remove lime scale, clean mussels and go from one job to the next one, day after day, year after year and it keeps on looking like steel, which in fact it really is.
LIFE SCRUB ALL is nothing precious, its insignificant, but when it is on board and you use it, if suddenly you can't find it any more you will really miss it because it really can't be substituted.

3) Cleaning the bilge and washing the hull

The bilge cleaner BILGE CLEANER is much more than a normal detergent.
Its hi-tech content makes it irreplaceable in lots of works and every day you can find a new use. Its water soluble patented formula, breaks up long chain hydrocarbons (oil, diesel, petrol, grease, tar, sludge and related dirt), it encloses them individually preventing them from coming together again as happens with other products.
BILGE CLEANER is highly recommended when it is necessary to clean a really “dirty” bilge and when we want to even keep it smelling good. A small quantity in the bilge while the yacht is underway, at berth, under sail or even the wave motion when moored will allow BILGE CLEANER to exert its entire power reaching also the most difficult parts to reach when the boat is not moving and, day after day, the bilge will achieve the aspect we have always wanted.
BILGE CLEANER is always important when working in the hull or bilge or when we are making maintenance works when laid up. As a matter of fact in these conditions it is easy for the oils in the bilge to wet those parts of the glass fibre which are not properly protected, or to impregnate as a growing stain the boats planking, seriously jeopardising any phase of the following painting.
It not only cleans the bilges in an exceptional way it is also extremely good for washing the outer engine (using a brush or, even better, a spray for inboard installations), to deodorize the WC (it contains menthol) even when you close up your boat, by putting 1 o 2 taps of BILGE CLEANER and letting the water run a little so that this can remain and work in the pipes. It is also useful to deeply clean ropes, canvas, bags etc., to wash fish boxes, to remove sludge on the sides, to clean all particulars where oil and grease build dirt and encrustations. BILGE CLEANER is without fluorides, that is to say it does not contribute to eutrophication, algae growth which effects some of our coasts.

4) Cleaning sails

SAIL CLEANER is a shampoo for sails recommendable at least once a year because thanks to its delicate and at the same time effective action it makes sails beautiful again, removing dirt halos, salt and stains in general. It is used by diluting it in proportion in fresh water and soaking the sail between 1 and 24 hours. In order to do this it is advisable to use your own home bath or to buy those PVC children's dinghies, fill it 70% full with fresh water and dilute SAIL CLEANER in it, afterward put the sail in well folded and pressed to get the air out. Every now and again agitate it and, if necessary, rinse it with the same water. After washing always vigorously scrub the contact points with the crosstrees to remove accumulated dirt. A longer soak does not cause any problems, then fasten it to the halyard and hang it in the sun and wind, rinsing it with a hosepipe. When after a few minutes it starts to dry the boat will be proud of its “new” sails.
